The AP Showcase went really well. I was so impressed by how great everyone's pieces looked displayed. I was asked to make a custom set of log mugs for another student and her family. So that will be fun! But, Good job to everyone! The hard work really paid off!

So I made two projects in the last two days: a fish and a possum. I think that I still need one more piece so I have to make that tomorrow and hopefully I can get it fired before Wednesday and then paint it. So much to do!

Okay so I'm a little more behind now cause my coyote blew up. But, I'm working on a new sculpture of a dead cow. It will look similar in structure to the picture above. I can not believe that our AP showcase is this month. So much to do still!!!

I painted my dog sculpture. I chose a dark maroon and grey. I have about two more concentration pieces to go but, since I am not submitting an AP portfolio, I'm not sure if I still have to make the required amount of pieces. Regardless, I have a lot of painting to due in order to get all of my pieces done by the AP art showcase! Yay!!

So I got my wisdom teeth taken out yesterday (at which point I completely zoned out) so my goal for today is to paint my sculptures while I'm still stuck at home and everyone is gone on vacation. I bought some paint and I'm hoping it will all turn out well!!!
Oh, I also asked if I could have my wisdom teeth. So I want to make another tooth ring at some point!

Spring Break!!!

So I am almost finished with my coyote. I have four more concentration pieces to do before my portfolio is complete. At the same time, I still have to glaze/paint all of my bisque fired work which will take time. So I am somewhat behind but I am hoping to get a lot done this spring break (which won't happen but I say it anyway in that hopes that someday it will motivate me). I can't believe that we have only three months left of school!!!
I added this image because I am always amazed when I see Julian Beever's sidewalk chalk art.

So my newest project is a coyote that is hunting. I also made another tree stump mug because I think that I want to give them as gifts to my teachers at the end of the year. I decided not to submit another AP portfolio because it's not only really expensive but I already submitted one last year. Anyway, I'm just really excited to continue making artwork and truthfully I don't know what i'm going to do with all my stuff I have made (once I have finished them).

So I have two rats done and one to go. My next project is going to be a fox/coyote scavenging on a vulture, which is the opposite of what normally happens. I have decided to use Beth Cavener Stichter's method of glazing her pieces. She simply uses house paint. I really like how the pieces are not glossy but have a slight sheen to them. The only thing is that house paint is not cheap.

So I have one dead rat finished and have decided to make a set of them. So I'll probably make 2 more. I want to focus on the idea that rats are often the subjects of human experiments. I haven't decided how I am going to portray that part of my idea yet.

What is interesting about rats is that while many people despise them, others have them as pets. In India, eating food that has been touched by rats is considered a blessing from god. There are many different perceptions of the rat.

So, my most recent pieces have been a dead dog and a deer head (as a hunter would mount it on the wall). I know.... its kinda morbid. But, my next project is going to be even better - a dead rat. haha Like I have said before, I think that death makes people uncomfortable and I am really curious to see how people react to my pieces. Anyways, I hope to get my rat finished next class so I can start on another (dead) project.

I feel like my work has changed quite a bit lately. Nothing I make is disgusting or gory, but there is a sense of disturbance. I guess my main goal in fixating on death - as that seems to be a reoccurring theme in my pieces - is the hope that people will come to terms with the idea of dying. As a culture, we tend to fear death, to see it has a depressing end to a short life. But, maybe its something more. This doesn't really make sense but it is a way to get a different reaction out of people. I don't really feel like I should post a picture with this post...

Soooooo....finals. yay! Beetle is no longer alive and the skull is kind of lacking the octopus. But, all in all, I at least got my three projects done on time. That's a first this year. If anyone has any suggestions for what I should make next...that'd be great. Just not a beetle. This picture has really nothing to do with this post, not to mention that it is also sideways, but, I just like the structure and shape of the pitcher plant.

So my newest project is a ceramic beetle. I want the shell to be shiny and iridescent. I also need to start glazing my other pieces. Yayyy!! I have nothing more to say...

Thursday, January 13, 2011

So, new project: skull with octopus and/or maybe not with sea anenomes. Now that I am working on a much smaller scale I can actually get projects done pretty fast which is nice. Now I just have to work on glazing my fired pieces.

New Project

I started a new project today. I am making a series of finches out of clay. I have decided to make the feet out of wire. I haven't decided how to photograph them yet though.
